Congrautlations to author Michael Long, whose book Leadership Principles of the American Mafia: A Bohemian Journey Through the Birth of the Underworld has been selected as one of three finalists in the Twentieth Annual National Indie Excellence Awards (NIEA), in the category of Multicultural Nonfiction AND as a finalist in the category of True Crime.
Mike’s book explores the history of organized crime in New York City from the late nineteenth through the first half of the twentieth century. Structured to show the chronological progression of crime as the city grew and expanded, the book also dives into NYC’s many culturally influenced criminal organizations (Jewish, Italian, Irish, and African American), as well as highlights the contributions of women to the New York underworld. With dozens of images, readers experience a delightful visual enhancement to Mike’s engaging, well-researched storytelling.
Mike and editor Cortni Merritt worked together on this title in several rounds of development over nearly two years. A passion project of Mike’s for many years before they connected, he came to Cortni with a solid working draft, which they put through multiple rounds of developmental edits before performing a thorough process of line editing and proofreading.
The National Indie Excellence Awards was founded in 2007 to celebrate self-published and independently published books in a wide range of genres. The Awards champion books that put forth great care and quality, authors who go the extra mile to “produce books of excellence in every aspect.”
Congratulations to Mike and to all of this year’s recipients and finalists of the NIEA !
