Description:

“The earth and myself are of one mind.”
Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce People

Shaping waters of silver takes magic. The kind bred of natural beauty, human wonder, grit, and kismet.

The story of Silver Creek, Idaho, tells of remarkable people who tended Sun Valley into the rarity that today endures the fast-paced world encroaching on its perimeter. A story of adventure, affection, and minds and hearts combining efforts toward a shared goal: river preservation. This tale includes trout and ducks, anglers, cattle ranchers, farmers, politicians—and one famous novelist.

In 1979, Guy Bonnivier was hired to renovate the Sawtooth Lodge in Hailey, Idaho, then build a visitor center on the nearby Silver Creek Preserve. Among a dispute between state government and local interests, the community’s sights were set on their beloved creek. Suddenly, Guy was an employee of The Nature Conservancy, responsible for a sprawling spring-fed watershed. He worked on the river for the next twenty years.

As Sun Valley’s population exploded, Silver Creek’s clear waters continued their slow, graceful journey to the Snake and Columbia Rivers, on to the Pacific. With stakes rising, Guy and his team of conservationists overcame numerous challenges, negotiating between what people called rights and what was truly right for the land.

Now, for the first time, Guy shares these tales of this unique land and the people who loved and labored to preserve it.
